Bangkok Day 4 (17/10/2013)

Woke up to another gloomy weather day.  Well, rain or shine, Victory Monument, here we come!  Lol! Armed with umbrellas, we set off to the BTS station.

Main purpose of going to Victory Monument - to check out the transport station where to board those vans to Amphawa (as we will be going there early tomorrow morning) as well as to go look for food - Boat Noodles!

First task accomplished.  Looking for the station to board the van was easy.  No sweat.  For those who are interested to find out more on transportation to Amphawa, please see my post on Bangkok Day 5 post.  Detailed directions there.

2nd task also accomplished.  Managed to find the stalls selling boat noodles that are located along a canal.  Aparently lots of locals and tourists loved to go there for at least a meal to experience those 10 baht a bowl noodles.  One bowl, one gulp, finished.  Thus it is not surprising to see stacks of bowls on every table.  Lol!

As it was a rainy day and we were rather early, there was not much crowd.  Detailed directions at the end of this post.

We took the opportunity to sit outdoor, with the canal in view.  Ok lah, no smelly stench.  Just that if you eat your noodles while staring at the canal, your imagination may run wild thinking that food you stuff in your mouth are the garbages floating along the canal.  yeeeeks!

Once you reach the start of the first boat noodle stall, you will notice that they all wear purple t shirts.  Walk further down, another stall with different t shirt colors.  Most people feedback that the orange t shirts stall are the nicest, and this happen to be the last stall..right at the end.

For us, we tried the orange t shirts stall.  Verdict? Ok..so so. The experience is more valuable than the taste.  heheee...

If you are going there by following my directions at the bottom of this post, the orange stall is located near that bridge you see in this picture  (the stall with the red/orange fence).

The first stall's cooking area (purple shirt)

Walking down the rows of stalls to look for orange t shirt stall...

Found it !

Chose a table just next to the canal..

That's all the stuff in one bowl..

As usual, snapshot of the menu for information ..

We wanted to order fish fried dumplings..was served this steam fish instead.  Not bad though..

As we have no intention of eating till full, this whole stack of bowls of noodles filled half our stomachs only

After our meal, the rain has almost stopped.  My initial impression of Victory Monument was just a transportation hub, little did I expect streets of stalls, small and medium sized shopping malls along the way ! We spent close to 3 hours just at Victory Monument!

TIP : Do you know that both the orange and purple t shirts stalls have a branch in Center One?  You can see this mall when you walk along the skywalk.  Thus, if you do not want to eat at their canal stall, then go into Center One for air con, mosquito and fly free dining.   :) Same pricing.  Center One is worth to pop in a for a walk.

It is easy to navigate.  Just relax and roam the streets.  You will sure find your way back to the skywalk to BTS.  Will show you at the end of the post.

The following pictures are all randomly taken, showing streets around that area, street food that we bought as well as malls that we passed by.  Do not look down on those small little malls.  If you can, just go in a take quick browse.  For all you know, you can discover some gem buys !  We did..

Went into " Center One "..saw Swensons.  Got a few hair salons. Mum had a hair cut there for 150 baht...pretty!

Walked down from Skywalk and roam streets..

Most street snacks will costs around 20 baht each bag/ serving

Along those street shops, we grapped t shirts for 50 bahts, shorts for 60-80 bahts etc.  Where to find such prices?!  Personally, I find that shopping here is slightly cheaper.  But of course what they sell are mainly daily wears and some decent office wears as well.  Bought a couple of handbags between 100-200 baht.

Bought a bag of ice Thai tea from a road side stall.  Refreshing !  I like the style of packing. Put tea in plastic bag, not class looking. Wah, put plastic bag into a nice paperbag..looks nicer! Of coz pay a bit more lah..

After spending almost half a day at Victory Monument, we went back to hotel to unload stuff and old folks took a rest.

AROUND 6pm, we headed off to SIAM BTS.  Aim? Walk the night market directly under Siam BTS Station as well as to have dinner at Ban Khun Mae.

SIAM Night Market ( NOTE : CLOSED ON MONDAY NIGHTS)

If you are not sure how to go to Siam Night Market, no fuss.  Refer back to my Bangkok Day 1 post, follow the directions you would to Som Tam Nua, you will definitely hit this market once you exit from the BTS. :))  Happy shopping !

Next, dinner at Ban Khun Mae.  Directions?  Refer to Bangkok Day 1 post, read directions to Som Tam Nua.  Ban Khun Mae's directions is inside there too.

Meal cost at Bahn Khum mae : 995 Baht

After a heavy dinner, we went shopping at Siam Paragon...

As we are setting off to Amphawa tomorrow, went back hotel earlier to do some packing and preparing an overnight bag.

More updates on Amphawa  in the next post!

that roundish orange bend between the 2 green sign? The walkway is just behind.

Start your walk..as you walk, you should see the monument on your lefthand side.

As you continue walking, there will be interval stairs that you see.  Unless you want to explore the streets below, just walk on.  Just to reassure, you will see some of the following landmarks

After about maybe 5-7 mins walk, you will see the canal
Once you see this canal, on the right side, you will see a stairs down.  Walk down and turn right.  Less than 15-20 steps, you will reach the 1st boat noodle stall, the purple shirts.  Just take your time to walk down the stretch and make your stall choice.  Enjoy !
