Shanghai / Hangzhou Day 2 (8/6/2014)

Woke up to perfect weather.  Temperature this morning is around 22-23 degrees..cooling!  Plan for today will be a trip to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Yu Yuan (Cheng Huang Miao) in the late afternoon.

First, roamed the streets for breakfast!  Surprise! There is a branch of Yang's Fried Dumplings near our hotel ! (小杨生煎包)  Actually, during our Day 5, we discovered an even nearer stall close to our hotel.  For today, let's share directions to this little restaurant.  Again, setting off from Level 1 of Sofitel, out from hotel entrance, we turned left, walk straight down the street till we see the following :

Between these 2 buildings, turn into the lane.  Continue walking straight (3-4 mins' walk)  till you see the small eatery (小杨生煎)on your right.

Along your walk, you will see this fruit stall, prices reasonable, fruits looked fresh..

The eatery. Apparently this is the most famous Sheng Jian in Shanghai..when we went Hangzhou, we also saw branches there!

Wanton Soup...

Vermicilli with Big Pork Bone (粉丝大骨汤)。。

Big piece of bone !

Whole pan of Sheng Jian in the kitchen..

Verdict? Well I loved the texture of the Sheng Jian's outer layer skin, but for the meat filling inside, I find it a tad too sweet for my liking.  The main attraction of this Sheng Jian - the piping hot scalding juice that is trapped inside the Sheng Jian, waiting to be released with first bite. Wow..bite carefully..just a small little hole enough for the juice to flow out onto your spoon.  Otherwise, tongue may be scalded, clothings may be stained with the " juice fountain". LOL!

After a satisfying meal, we back track onto Nanjing Pedestrian Walk and went to the metro station to take a train to visit - Oriental Pearl TV Tower!

First, we went to the metro station to buy our store value cards. There seem always a long queue at the ticketing vending machine, hence it makes more sense to buy a store value card.  RMB20 deposit for each card, top up RMB30/- and we were all set to go!  Please see my Post -  Day 8 for important reminder on the store value card.  Also my experience on early metro station closure on Day 7 !

The train was insanely packed with commuters! Arghhh....morning office crowd!

Once we came out from the metro station, we see this sign..so just follow..and walk !

Random street scenes..

LOL! Saw this fried chicken outlet ( Kentucky's brother similar brand - that's what it sign read!?!?!)

When we reached the ticketing booth, we decided not to buy tickets to go up the Oriental Pearl TV Tower as the weather was rather misty and also, we have been to Taipei 101..so already have the experience of viewing a city at great height.  It was also a hazy day, so I guess not much of a view from the top..

Instead, we bought a ticket to visit the Shanghai Museum.  I strongly recommend this attraction..it's a must !  I was rather skeptical at first as we are not "museum goers".  But end up we spent almost 2.5 hours there.  Soooo many photos taking opportunities, so many interesting displays and wax figurines to admire! Entrance fee is RMB35/- per pax.

Some of the almost 200 photos that I took while touring the museum !  :))

When we were done with walking around the museum, we walked back to the metro station.  Stopped at one of the Ramen eatery to have our lunch.

Not too cheap..but the noodle portion rather big.  If you are not too hungry, one bowl of noodle can actually be shared by 2 person..

Took a train back to our hotel (one stop only) for the old folks to rest for a while.

Around 5pm, we set out to Yu Yuan (Cheng Huang Miao).  By afternoon, weather was slightly warm thus we decided to go there via 2 taxis.   To take the Metro, it is actually only 2 station away, but we were to lazy to even walk the 50m to the metro station ! :))  Taxi fare costs RMB14/- for each cab.

Tell the taxi driver to stop at Shanghai Lao Fan Dian (上海老饭店)Picture below..

Photos...

There is a foodcourt and eatery lane for those who wants a quick meal. But quality wise, I am not too sure..coz we did not try..

The famous Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao.  When queueing up, be careful as one queue leads to the restaurant upstairs and the other queue..to buy from a window counter and eat along the way. We wanted to dine in the restaurant but queued at the wrong line. End up having to queue again..:(

Once you reach the restaurant at the 3rd floor....NOTE : There is 2 entrance...the right and left side.  The left side serves dishes above RMB80 whilst the right hand side entrance serves food that is below RMB50/-.  Don't ask me why...I also don't like this differentiation.  We went to the RMB50/-..coz we just want to try the xiao long bao..NOT CHEAP !  Should have just queue downstairs and buy the pack, go and eat kind.  Looks tastier and also much cheaper...by almost 10 times!

Many diners ordered this. We did too.  But it was a joke. The dumpling looks big and tempting..poke a straw through and "drink" the "gravy / soup" inside..that's it! NO meat fillings.. nothing...split the dumpling open..only all dumpling skin left...

Xiao Long Bao..heheeee...kids too fast with their chopsticks..only 2 left when I got my camera ready..

Finding your way around Yu Yuan is rather simple as it is not really that huge a place.  There are souvenir shops around...but must hassle hard on the prices.  There are also shops along those side streets that we can do some shopping...but it can be tiring to keep bargaining.  From Yu Yuan, we actually walked back to Nanjing Pedestrian Walk and back to Sofitel  It's approx. 1km...about 20 mins walk.

On way back to the hotel, we stopped at a random noodle stall...SUPPER !

Went back to hotel around 9.45pm.  Got to pack a small bag for our 3 days 2 night trip to Hangzhou tomorrow morning.
